Toys "R" Us 70-Inch Digital Wall

Year-Long In-Store Multi-Touch Gift Discovery & Interactive Store Map

70-inch Toys R Us Digital Wall kiosk deployed in Redwood City
The custom 70-inch multi-touch Digital Wall deployed in the Redwood City Toys "R" Us / Babies "R" Us store.

Overview

Deployed continuously from November 2012 through November 2013 in the Redwood City Toys “R” Us / Babies “R” Us store, the Toys “R” Us Digital Wall was EPIC Design Lab’s inaugural venture into physical in-store kiosk technology.

Built around a custom-enclosed 70-inch multi-touch display, the system gave families and gift shoppers a fluid, approachable interface to explore curated seasonal gift guides, search real-time local store inventory, and pinpoint exact product locations on an interactive vector map of the store aisles.

System Architecture

  • WebGL + SVG Hybrid Interface: Combined a real-time WebGL background layer with smooth CSS3/HTML5 product carousels and an interactive SVG wayfinding map showing exact aisle and bay locations inside the Redwood City store.
  • Local Inventory Unification: Powered by a Node.js and MongoDB backend integrating product catalog data from eBay Enterprise with live local stock feeds from eBay Local.
  • Year-Long Field Reliability: Engineered automated watchdog processes, remote telemetry, and Kinect-driven presence sensing to operate unattended on the retail floor for 12 months of continuous customer testing.
